In this day and age, the standard diet consists of an overabundance of omega-6 fatty acids, typically found in meats, poultry, safflower oil and vegetable oils. Omega-6 does have an important role in the body, but when the ratio of omega-6 exceeds omega-3, it creates the perfect environment for systemic inflammation, which is becoming recognised as the root of almost all disease manifestations, from depression to obesity. The omega ratio in modern diets is estimated around 20:1- 30:1 omega-6 to omega-3, however, the body craves a ratio closer to 1:1 to keep inflammation low. Therefore, incorporating oily fish high in omega-3 such as salmon, sardines, and mackerel can be beneficial for balancing out this ratio, and lowering systemic inflammation.
